  • Detergent
  • A high quality detergent is incorporated in AC2010A. Far superior to detergents available in earlier generation additives.
  • In a diesel engine some amount of “fouling” of injectors is inevitable.
  • Fouling refers to formation of deposits on injector seats and nozzles.
  • Fouling results in loss of atomization quality. Atomization refers to the process of forming very fine droplets of diesel as it is injected into the combustion chamber.
  • If the injectors are fouled the atomization will suffer. Instead of fine droplets coarser droplets will be formed. These coarser take longer to vaporize, mix with air and burn.
  • The time the fuel has to burn in the diesel engine’s combustion chamber is very limited – typically less than 1/100th of a second or less. Poor atomization will result, therefore, in delayed and incomplete combustion. This, in turn, is detrimental to fuel economy.
  • The detergent in the additive serves to clean injectors. Sustained additive use ensures that cleanliness is sustained. Clean injectors imply that fuel efficiency lost due to injector fouling is restored.
  • The effectiveness of detergency is measured by a standard test – the XUD 9 test. In this procedure the fuel under test is passed through the injector under standard conditions and the loss in the flow area is measured. The loss in flow area is a measure of the fouling characteristics of the fuel. Typically in this test untreated diesel will give a flow loss of 85%. Diesel treated with earlier generation additives will result in a flow loss of the order of 60%. AC2010A treated fuel will result in flow losses of less than 30%, clearly establishing the additive’s superior detergency.
  • Cetane Improver
  • In a diesel engine the fuel ignites on its own because of the high temperature in the combustion chamber. The self ignition quality of the diesel is measured by the cetane number. The higher the cetane number the better the fuel’s self ignition property.
  • If the cetane number of the diesel is lower than what the engine is designed for there will be a greater an optimum delay in diesel ignition. Given the very short time available for combustion this ignition delay will result in incomplete combustion and, as a consequence, loss of fuel efficiency.
  • The cetane number of Indian diesel is 51 minimum under the Bharath III specifications. By contrast the International Harmonized Fuel Charter calls for a cetane number of 56.
  • The AC2010A additive improves the cetane number of diesel by 2 to 3 points. In effect, it upgrades the ignition quality of Indian fuel to near global norms.
  • Cetane number enhancement, like detergency, promotes more complete fuel combustion and, as a result, fuel efficiency. Detergency assures clean injectors which in turn ensure that fuel atomization is optimum and vapourization swift. A high cetane number assures quick self ignition. Thus detergency and cetane improvement go hand in hand and complement each other. If for some reason injectors are fouled and atomization compromised the ill effects of this are somewhat mitigated by cetane improvement.

  • Friction Modifier
  • The friction modifier is a unique component in the AC2010A diesel additive.
  • The friction modifier helps in reducing frictional losses in the fuel injection pump and the top end of the engine where the lubricant does not reach.
  • In modern diesel engines the pressure developed by the pump is considerable, in cases of the order of 1000 bar or more. Thus considerable energy is required to drive the pump and this energy has to be provided by the engine itself. Reduced friction in the pump will result in greater engine energy being available for driving the vehicle.
  • The friction modifier contributes to enhanced fuel economy.
  • Whereas the fuel economy benefits from detergency take some time to clearly manifest the benefit of the friction modifier is almost immediately discernible.
  • In an engine two significant energy losses are due to friction and incomplete combustion. The AC2010A additive helps to mitigate both these losses and therefore substantially reduces fuel consumption for the same work output.

  • TOTAL organized a comprehensive field trial to establish the fuel economy benefit of AC2010A the using the services of ICAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology), Manesar, Haryana.
  • ICAT is a Government of India organization charged with the responsibility of certifying vehicles for safety, emission and fuel economy standards.
  • The ICAT study involved 11 trucks with a consistent operating pattern.
  • During the three month study, to the maximum extent possible, the driver of a truck was not changed to assure consistency in driving habits. The truck operations involved picking up loads of cement from factories in Rajasthan and transporting these to Gurgaon or Delhi. On the return leg the trucks traveled unladen.
  • During the study each truck ran approximately 4000 kms without additive to establish the base level performance criterion. Subsequently each truck ran approximately 8000 kms with additive.
  • ICAT measured the fuel economy on the basis of tonne kms per litre. This is the internationally accepted norm for measuring energy efficiency in the transportation sector.
  • ICAT has reported that use of the additive AC2010A has induced fuel economy benefits to the extent of 6.28%.
